Yellow fruit set against a yellow cloth and wall. Van Gogh painted this still life in Paris in autumn 1887, setting himself a challenge: just how much could he do with a single colour and still make the composition sing?
As it turns out, quite a lot. Quinces, lemons and pears gather in a golden mound, balanced by pale grapes on the right. Thick, directional brushstrokes build the scene in shades ranging from lemon to ochre, with touches of cool green and blue to keep the eye moving. Van Gogh even painted the original frame yellow to match, and dedicated the canvas to Theo.
This sunny work adds a lift to a kitchen, dining room or dim hallway, while its wide format works well above a sideboard in a New Zealand home. Choose from several poster sizes.
