Only a handful of painters have set out to capture rain itself. Van Gogh did so in November 1889, gazing from his window at the asylum. The walled field he painted through every season is shown here beneath a heavy shower.
Fine diagonal strokes of rain sweep across the canvas, like marks on a pane of glass. Beyond them, the field dissolves into greens and greys, the wall forms a pale strip and the hills recede from view. Van Gogh drew inspiration from Japanese prints, particularly Hiroshige, whose rain scenes he had copied in Paris two years earlier.
Thoughtful and atmospheric, this work suits a bedroom, home office or any spot where a touch of melancholy feels right alongside your morning coffee. It’s available as a poster in several sizes, with a look that sits comfortably in New Zealand homes. Want to see the same field beneath clear skies? Find it in our collection of Van Gogh landscapes.
