A torrent of dark green water rushes across the picture, broken by white foam where it hits the rocks. Above it, the steep bank is covered in pink and grey stones and patches of moss. There is no sky at all, only water and rock.
In the early spring of 1889 Monet went to Fresselines, in the Creuse, in the centre of France, invited by the poet Maurice Rollinat. He found a wild landscape of gorges and rivers, and painted it in heavy, sombre colours, unlike anything he had done in Normandy. The canvas is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Powerful and textured, it suits an office, a living room with dark tones or a mountain house. Our Monet posters include another view of the Creuse valley from the same stay. Our article on Monet follows his travels across France. Several sizes, framed or not.
