In the garden of the asylum at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh often painted plants at close range, as though he’d crouched among the flower beds. Here, he leans towards a rosebush, with its thick, shadowy leaves and blooms in pale cream, touched with pink and green.
Notice the flower at the bottom: a little green beetle, likely a rose chafer, rests on its petals. It’s a detail you might only spot after spending a moment with the painting, and that’s part of its appeal. Against the almost black-green background, the roses seem to shine. The cropped, upright composition also recalls a Japanese hanging scroll.
The tall format and rich greens work well in a hallway, bathroom or bedroom with darker walls, including the characterful homes found around New Zealand. You can order the design as a poster in several sizes. Explore more floral works in our collection of Van Gogh flower posters, and read about the garden that inspired him at Saint-Rémy.
