The Mediterranean, June 1888. Van Gogh travelled to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer to see the sea. He told Theo that its colour was like that of a mackerel, shifting constantly between green, violet and blue.
This seascape captures that changeable quality. Waves sweep towards you in thick bands of emerald, turquoise and ultramarine, capped with white foam. A fishing boat with white sails sits on the horizon, with two more farther out. The paint is so heavily applied it almost looks sculpted, and grains of beach sand are said to remain embedded in the original canvas.
Fresh and breezy, this piece suits a bathroom, a seaside bach or a bedroom. It’s available as a poster in several sizes, with a feel that fits naturally into New Zealand homes.
