This is the final self-portrait Van Gogh painted in Paris, during the winter of 1887–88, just before setting off for Arles. He depicts himself at work behind his easel, palette full of colour and brushes in hand.
Later, he described the painting to his sister with striking candour: a pinkish-grey face, green eyes, ash-coloured hair, lines on his forehead and around his mouth, a stiff, wooden look, and a very red beard. It’s all there. Long brushstrokes shape the blue smock, while a pale grey-blue fills the background. At the bottom, the palette holds a small array of pure colours he had learnt to work with in Paris.
This is a portrait of a man taking stock before a fresh start. It suits a workspace, studio or desk, including the relaxed feel of a New Zealand home. Our poster is available in a range of sizes. Explore the full collection of Van Gogh art prints, then read our article about what followed in Arles.
