Seurat and Signac used tiny dots of pure colour, which merge in the viewer’s eye. In 1887, Van Gogh applied their technique to a self-portrait. The result is his closest experiment with pointillism.
The background is a deep blue scattered with orange flecks, while his coat is formed from russet and plum tones. Even the skin is made up of distinct touches of pink, orange, green and blue, placed side by side. But Van Gogh couldn’t stick to dots alone. Around the eyes and beard, the marks grow longer and begin to follow the contours, hinting at the directional brushwork that would become his signature.
His gaze is thoughtful and slightly averted, giving the portrait a quiet intensity. It sits beautifully in a room with dark walls or a library, from a Wellington villa to a modern Auckland home.
