A straw hat is a sure sign of summer and painting in the open air. In 1887, Van Gogh spent long days working beside the Seine and on the outskirts of Paris, wearing a hat like this to shade his eyes from the sun.
Here, the hat fills the upper part of the image like a golden halo, its brim formed from long, sweeping brushstrokes. Beneath it is a weathered face, a sandy beard and a slightly guarded expression. His blue work smock, like those worn by farm labourers, fills the lower part of the canvas. The background is speckled with small touches of pink, cream and blue.
Blue and yellow, colours he would use so boldly in Arles, are already at work here. This print suits a bright living room, kitchen or studio, whether in a city flat or a home with a view of the hills. It comes in several sizes. You’ll find two more self-portraits in straw hats in our Van Gogh art collection, while our article on his years in France follows his journey from Paris to the south.
