Of Vincent van Gogh’s three self-portraits in a straw hat from 1887, this one has the lightest palette. The background is almost white, with a pale cream ground flecked with quick strokes of blue. His smock is a soft sand shade, picked out with a bright red stripe down the front.
Long, relaxed strokes of yellow and cream shape the hat. Beneath it, his face is finely defined and watchful: keen blue eyes, a sandy beard and a firm mouth. Van Gogh appears to have worked quickly, allowing areas of canvas to show through. The result has the spontaneity of a sketch, like a summer afternoon in the studio with the windows open.
