Van Gogh seldom painted snow. In January 1890, while at Saint-Rémy, he made an exception, using a print of Millet’s Winter as his starting point. There are no people in this scene, just a snow-covered field and a harrow resting in the furrows.
The palette is almost all blue and green. Short, horizontal strokes of mint, aqua and white form the snow, while a pale green sky holds a soft warmth near the horizon. A village and a solitary tree stand in the distance. The scene feels cold, quiet and a little bleak, yet has an unexpected luminosity.
This print suits a winter-inspired wall, a bach, or anyone drawn to restrained colour. It pairs well with grey, white and natural timber, and sits comfortably in homes from Auckland to Queenstown. We print it as a poster in several sizes. Find more of Millet’s works reimagined by Van Gogh in our Van Gogh posters and prints.
