Stand beneath a spiral staircase, tip your head right back, and the steps begin to look like a shell.
That’s just what you see here. The underside of the stairs opens out in smooth, pale sections, each a little lighter than the one before, then coils into a dark centre. The frame around it is almost entirely black. There’s no railing, no one in view and nothing to reveal what sort of building it is. Just one luminous curve.
Among the designs in our brutalist poster range, this is perhaps the most graphic. From across a room, it might be a nautilus shell or a minimalist print. Look closer and you’ll spot the joins between the concrete slabs and the gentle gradation of light. It would sit naturally in a home from Auckland to Ōtepoti.
- Bold contrast that suits white, grey or dark walls

Concrete staircases like this were a hallmark of the movement. Find out how brutalism began and what’s behind its return.
