The same park as Garden with Courting Couples, seen at a different hour. In the summer of 1887, Van Gogh returned to the Square Saint-Pierre in Asnières late in the day, as the sky turned golden and the trees stood dark against it.
A gently curving path, painted in pale blue and lilac, leads into the scene. On either side, rounded trees and bushes take shape in short strokes of green, with warmer touches where the low sun falls. The sky is washed in yellow and soft orange. There’s a quiet stillness to this summer evening, as people begin making their way home.
