Everything seems to drift across a red ground. A green vase cradles a single white magnolia among the leaves, while a large copper pot hangs behind it like the sun. Around them, Matisse sets a lilac jug, a turquoise vase, a pot of blue flowers and a spotted seashell. There are no shadows, and none are needed.
Painted in 1941, the year Matisse underwent a serious operation, the work feels like a statement of intent. The objects sit almost like cut-paper shapes, anticipating the art that would come next. The canvas is now held by the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Its generous width suits a spot above the sofa, sideboard or dining table. The red feels warm rather than forceful, helping tie a room together in a Wellington townhouse or a home elsewhere in Aotearoa. Choose from several sizes, with an optional frame.
