In August 1888, Van Gogh was getting the Yellow House in Arles ready for Paul Gauguin. To decorate the guest room he painted sunflowers, working fast because the flowers lasted only a few days. This fourth canvas of the series is almost entirely yellow, flowers, vase and wall, with a few blue lines to hold it together.
You can follow the life of the flower across the bunch, from fresh golden heads to bowed ones full of seed. The only signature is on the vase: "Vincent". Some months later Gauguin painted him in the middle of a sunflower picture. The painting has been at the National Gallery in London since 1924.
We print it as a poster in several sizes. It lifts a lounge or an entranceway, even on grey days. Browse our Van Gogh poster collection for more flowers, and read about the Yellow House in our journal.
