Matisse crops in so closely that the body almost vanishes. All that’s left is a pink arm, bent at the elbow and framed by patches of red, orange, violet and leafy green. Behind it, a strip of blue runs across the picture, marked with white wavy lines.
Le Bras dates to 1938, a few years before his paper cut-outs, and you can already see the direction his work was taking. Flat fields of colour, lines scratched into the paint and shapes that read as pattern before figure. This painting sits at the very edge of abstraction.
On the wall, it feels more like a modern canvas than an Old Master. We like it in a living room with simple furniture, or in a bedroom that could do with a little warmth. Choose a size that suits your space, framed or unframed, and see how it sits alongside the other works in our Henri Matisse prints and posters. It has an easy fit in homes from Auckland to Dunedin.
To follow Matisse’s path from Fauvism to scissors, our article on Matisse fills in the gaps.
