A little boy in a white smock stands on a sunny gravel path, holding a hoop. Behind him, a row of blue-and-white pots full of flowers leads to the house, its wall covered in climbing plants, where a woman watches from the doorway. Big trees and a blue sky with white clouds fill the left side.
The boy is Jean and the woman is Camille, at the house Monet rented in Argenteuil. In 1873 the family was doing well: his paintings sold, and he could afford a garden and a maid. This happy summer picture is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
Warm and family-like, it suits an entrance, a living room or a child's room. Our Monet prints and posters include other scenes of Camille and Jean in their gardens. Our article on Claude Monet tells the story of these Argenteuil years. Several sizes.
