A huge old oak spreads its branches across the whole top of the picture, its trunk thick and grey in the middle. Light falls through the leaves onto a carpet of dead leaves and ferns, and a thin birch trunk shines white on the left. The forest closes behind in dark green.
In 1865 Monet stayed at Chailly, at the edge of the forest of Fontainebleau, preparing a huge picnic scene. He also painted this famous oak, named after the Swiss painter Karl Bodmer who often drew it. The canvas belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Deep and calm, it brings the forest into a living room, a study or a country house. Our Claude Monet prints and posters include his early landscapes before Impressionism. Our article on Monet tells the story of the young painter. Several sizes, framed or not.
