In June 1890, Van Gogh set up behind the church at Auvers-sur-Oise, a Gothic building that still stands today, and painted its rear, known as the chevet. It is among the best-known works from his final weeks.
The church appears to bend and sway. Its stone walls are rendered in violet and blue, the windows are dark and the roof is orange. Behind it, the sky is a deep cobalt, almost like night, though it is daytime. In the foreground, a sandy track splits around a patch of grass as a peasant woman in a white bonnet walks away. Van Gogh wrote to his sister that the building looked violet against a plain, deep-blue sky of pure cobalt.
Striking and faintly unsettling, this work suits a living room or entryway, whether in a city flat or a home elsewhere in Aotearoa. Order it as a poster in a choice of sizes.
