Jazz, the book Matisse published in 1947, brims with circus acts. The Codomas takes its name from a family of trapeze artists, but don’t expect to see acrobats. Instead, you get a sense of their performance: two blue lines swinging like trapeze bars, a yellow net dotted with black squares, and a wavy yellow ribbon crossing a green band, like a body suspended in mid-air.
An orange border scattered with pink and violet leaves frames the scene, much like a curtain around a circus ring. Each shape was cut from paper painted with gouache, then reproduced in the book.
We love it in playful spaces, from a child’s room to a colourful living room or studio. It has a cheerful feel. Choose a size, add a frame if you like, and explore more Matisse cut-out posters from the same series.
The story of how illness led him to work with scissors is quite something. Read how Matisse began drawing with scissors.
