Van Gogh’s copies of Millet’s work are well known, but he also reworked a print after Honoré Daumier. In February 1890, while at Saint-Rémy, he painted this version of a scene by the French caricaturist and painter, whose keen observations of daily life he admired.
Four people sit around a small table outside: an older man in a top hat, a man with a drink, a younger figure in a red cap and a child. They suggest the different stages of life, united by the same drink. Factory chimneys send smoke across the horizon behind them. Van Gogh recast the black-and-white image in shades of blue, green and brown, outlining the figures with bold strokes.
This is a less familiar, gently satirical side of Van Gogh, with a story to tell. It suits a dining room, kitchen or bar nook, including in a Kiwi home. The poster is available in several sizes.
