In this square view, the bridge sits a little lower, with weeping willows and dense trees rising above it to the top of the canvas. Below, the pool is a mosaic of lily pads and pale flowers, and the reeds on both banks frame the scene like curtains.
Monet bought the land across the road from his house in 1893 and diverted a small stream to create his pond. By 1899 the plants had grown, and he started painting the garden seriously. This canvas belongs to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Lush and green, it is perfect above a bed, in a bathroom or in a calm living room. Our Claude Monet art prints include other bridges of 1899 and the late, wilder versions. Our article on Monet tells how the water garden was born. Square format, several sizes.
