Raspberry pink, chalk white and a hint of green. In this Lagoon, Matisse arranges seaweed shapes in long horizontal rows, as though the current is drawing them all along together. A black band at the top, a coral strip on the right and a small blue leaf in the corner guide your eye around the page.
The background is a very pale blue, almost white, giving the print a light, airy feel. Of the three Lagoons in Jazz, this one has the strongest rhythm. It feels more like a piece of music than a seascape, a fitting choice for a book named after jazz.
Where might it work? In a bathroom, of course, or in a softly coloured bedroom, where the pink could pick up the shade of a cushion or throw. It’s available in several sizes, with or without a frame. It would sit comfortably in a Kiwi home.
