In Nuenen, the village where his father served as pastor, an old church tower stood among the fields, encircled by the plain wooden crosses of the local farmers’ graveyard. It was due to be demolished in 1885, so Van Gogh painted it for one final time.
Solid and square, the tower has brown and ochre walls, with its spire already removed. Birds wheel across a grey sky, while a handful of crosses tilt in the grass below. Van Gogh wrote that he wished to show how simply farmers are laid to rest in the very soil they worked, and how faith and religion fall away as rural life carries on.
This subdued, earthy painting sits naturally in a library, study or room with dark timber and leather, including character-filled New Zealand homes. It’s available as a poster in a range of sizes.
