Not long after painting this young peach tree in blossom in March 1888, Van Gogh heard that Anton Mauve had died. A painter associated with the Hague School, Mauve was his cousin by marriage and had given him some of his first art lessons. Van Gogh inscribed Souvenir de Mauve on the canvas and sent it to Mauve’s widow.
This is a tender farewell. The slender tree stands on its own, its branches dotted with pale pink blossom. Lilac and green cover the ground, a reed fence borders the right-hand side, and a soft blue sky stretches above. There’s nothing sombre about the scene; even grief finds expression in flowers and light.
Its tall, narrow shape fits neatly beside a window, along a hallway or above a bedside table, including in the more compact rooms of New Zealand homes. Available as a poster in several sizes, it pairs well with other blossoming trees from our Van Gogh collection. You can also read about Van Gogh’s first spring in the south of France in our article.
