Van Gogh painted this supper scene in Nuenen, in the Netherlands, in the spring of 1885. Five people gather under one oil lamp around a dish of potatoes, and coffee is being poured. Before he started, he spent a whole winter on studies of the villagers' heads and hands, dozens of them.
He wanted the picture to say that these people had "tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish", and that their food was honestly earned. The greens and browns are intentional; he described the colour as that of a dusty potato with its skin still on. Anthon van Rappard, a fellow painter, called it clumsy, yet Vincent believed it was his best work so far. The original is at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
