A group of men circles a small courtyard, surrounded by towering brick walls. A handful of tiny windows sit high above, letting in a little light but remaining well out of reach.
Van Gogh painted this scene at Saint-Rémy in February 1890, working from an engraving by Gustave Doré in a book about London. He was living in an institution himself at the time. Many viewers recognise his red-haired features in the central prisoner, who gazes out towards us. Blue-greens and greys set the mood, while the carefully rendered brickwork heightens the sense of confinement.
This is not a decorative work in the conventional sense, but it carries real weight and often appeals to those drawn to art with meaning. It can sit naturally in a study or hallway, including in a New Zealand home. Choose from several poster sizes.
