In June 1889 Van Gogh was living at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. His window faced east, and before sunrise he would watch the fields. He wrote to Theo that he had seen the countryside "a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big". In the painting that star shines to the right of the cypress, beneath a crescent moon and a sky in constant motion.
The village is partly imagined, and its sharp steeple looks more like the Netherlands than Provence. Van Gogh painted it from memory in the studio and doubted it had worked. Today it is one of the treasures of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
We print it as a poster in several sizes. The deep blues settle a bedroom and give a lounge some drama. Browse more night scenes in our Van Gogh poster collection, and read about his year in Saint-Rémy.
