Klimt gives a sunflower the presence of a person. Its stem is hidden beneath a long dress of heart-shaped leaves, while its yellow and brown flower head rests above like a face, tilted slightly to one side. A cluster of small red, white and blue blooms gathers at its base, forming a kind of hem.
Many see a link between this Sonnenblume and the couple in The Kiss, created around the same time: both have a tall silhouette and a flower-covered ground. Behind it, tiny dots form a dense blue-green veil, with the sunflower standing alone at the centre, much like a portrait subject.
With its gentle, slightly unusual character, this flower portrait suits a kitchen, bedroom or sunny hallway, from a Wellington villa to a contemporary home. It comes in a range of sizes, with framing options available. Explore a whole garden of sunflowers in our Klimt art prints.
