In May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms in a house on Place Lamartine in Arles. Painted yellow with green shutters, it immediately won him over. In September, he captured it and the surrounding street beneath a rich blue sky.
His house is on the right, marked by its green door and shutters. Nearby, there’s a shop with a pink awning, adjoining houses, a handful of people on the street and a train crossing a bridge in the distance. He told Theo about houses the colour of sulphur beneath a pure cobalt sky. It was a difficult subject, he said, which made him all the more determined to master it.
This was where he planned to establish a studio in the south, and where he welcomed Gauguin a month later. A work with real significance for Van Gogh admirers, it sits naturally in an entryway or living room, whether in a city home or a bach. Available as a poster in a range of sizes.
