In summer 1887, Van Gogh stepped into a wood on the outskirts of Paris, paused and painted the scene before him: slender trees and a carpet of little white flowers.
Sunlight slips between the leaves. Across the canvas, short, distinct touches of green, yellow, blue and white reflect the approach of the Neo-Impressionists. The upright trunks create a steady rhythm, almost like a curtain. Look closely and the forest floor appears to glimmer, touched by the gentle light of a warm afternoon.
