The hospital of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole had a spacious garden that was a little overgrown. In autumn 1889, it became a daily subject for Van Gogh, who was allowed to paint there whenever he felt up to it.
In this canvas, tall tree trunks sweep up the composition, bending and branching as they go. Behind them, the leaves glow in shades of orange and gold, while a dark cypress stands on the right. Yellow strokes cover the ground. The scene feels full of movement, as though even the trees are reaching upwards.
This bold, vertical composition brings energy to a slim wall or the space beside a bookcase, whether in an Auckland apartment or a home elsewhere in the country. We offer it as a poster in several sizes. You can find more works from Van Gogh’s years at the asylum in our Van Gogh poster collection, while this article about his time in Arles and Saint-Rémy explores why the garden meant so much to him.
