Before the celebrated vases of sunflowers in Arles, Van Gogh painted these. In Paris in late summer 1887, he captured severed sunflower heads resting on their sides: no vase or table, just an intimate view of the blooms.
Two large flower heads span the wide canvas, set against a rich blue background. One faces forward, its centre packed with seeds; the other shows its underside, crowned with pointed green sepals. The petals are beginning to curl and dry, rendered in bold, twisting strokes of yellow and ochre. Rather than a bouquet, it feels like a portrait of a flower nearing the end of its life.
Gauguin was so taken with these Paris sunflower studies that he bought two. They still feel daring and unexpected today. The wide format sits beautifully above a sofa or sideboard, whether in a city flat or a Kiwi home. Choose from several poster sizes.
