Further into the woods, the light shifts. In this Undergrowth, painted near Paris in 1887, Van Gogh turns his attention to the tree bases: sturdy trunks entwined with climbing ivy, a forest floor in deep greens and blues, and the occasional shaft of sunshine catching the leaves in pale yellow.
There’s no sky in sight. The scene feels enclosed and intimate, with a hint of secrecy. Dense, textured brushstrokes build up the bark and foliage in layers of short marks. It’s a quieter, more enigmatic work than its sunlit companion, Trees and Undergrowth, and that’s part of its appeal.
It sits naturally in a reading nook, study or bedroom with dark-coloured walls, and will appeal to nature lovers drawn to the shade rather than full sun. We print it as a poster in a range of sizes, suited to homes from Auckland to the South Island. Explore more forests and fields in our Van Gogh nature prints.
