After arriving in Paris in the summer of 1886, Van Gogh painted dozens of still lifes featuring flowers. Bouquets cost less than hiring models and gave him a chance to work on colour each day. This vase of Chinese asters and gladioli is among the most richly coloured.
The blooms spill from a dark ceramic vase in shades of pink, red and white, while a few gladioli reach above the rest. Behind them, a deep, warm red-brown backdrop recalls the darker palette of his Dutch period. The flowers, though, are rendered in thick, expressive strokes, with brighter colours beginning to emerge. You can see his work shifting from shadow towards light.
This full, classic bouquet adds warmth to a dining room, lounge or entryway with traditional furnishings, whether in a Wellington villa or a home elsewhere in Aotearoa. The print comes in a range of sizes. Explore Van Gogh prints featuring flowers, or read our article on how the light in Paris brightened his palette.
