Van Gogh spent a year at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, a former monastery just beyond Saint-Rémy. One autumn day in 1889, he went out into the fields and turned to paint the building from the outside.
Behind a field of blue, ochre and green stripes, the buildings come into view. The chapel tower stands at the centre, ringed by trees with orange and golden leaves. A soft blue sky stretches overhead. It’s unusual to see such a cheerful, colourful scene of a psychiatric hospital, yet that’s what it depicts: the place that both confined and sheltered him.
The painting has a story of its own: Elizabeth Taylor once owned it and kept it for decades. It sits comfortably in a living room or home office, whether in a city flat or a bach. The poster comes in several sizes. Explore more scenes from Van Gogh’s time at the asylum in our collection of Van Gogh posters, and read about life at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in our article.
