Van Gogh painted the first version outdoors near Saint-Rémy in July 1889. He was so taken with it that he went on to create more versions in his studio. The whole landscape seems in motion: wheat ripples, clouds curl like waves and the cypress twists like a flame. The composition remains beautifully balanced, with the upright tree set against the long, horizontal stretches of field and sky.
