A lone white seaweed shape unfurls across a red background, with a band of green behind it, like deep water glimpsed through a gap. Matisse cut the form freehand in 1947, when scissors had all but taken the place of his brushes. Look closely and you’ll notice four small white squares floating among the fronds. They keep the composition from feeling too quiet.
