It may be hard to picture now, but in 1886 Montmartre still had windmills along its hilltop. Some were grinding grain, while others had become dance halls or lookout spots. Van Gogh was Dutch, so the scene may have felt familiar, and he painted these mills several times.
Here, two mills stand above a tangle of gardens, fences and sheds beneath a pale, cloudy sky. A small flag flutters from the closer one. The colours are subdued, with browns, greys and greens picked out by a few touches of red. Van Gogh signed the lower right in red. It captures a village on the city’s outskirts, just before it vanished. The muted palette would sit comfortably in a New Zealand hallway, kitchen or home office.
This charming, gently nostalgic print is available in a range of poster sizes. To see more views of Montmartre, browse the full Van Gogh collection. You can also read about Van Gogh’s arrival in Paris and the years that followed on our blog.
