Near Saint-Rémy, low farm buildings nestle into the landscape, partly screened by olive trees. Van Gogh painted this scene in 1889, during the year he spent at the nearby asylum.
The roofs are a muted rust, the olive trees a silvery green, and yellow brushstrokes flare across the grass in the foreground. Tall cypresses frame the scene, nearly black against a turquoise sky. Far off, the hills recede in pale lilac. Almost every feature of the Provençal countryside he cherished comes together in this view.
Hang it in your living room or above a desk for a glimpse of the south, whether you’re in a city flat or a home elsewhere in Aotearoa. Available as a poster in several sizes.
