Two young women in white summer dresses and straw hats sit in a narrow rowing boat that cuts diagonally across the picture. The water around them is deep blue and violet, and their reflections float upside down beneath the hull.
Monet painted this scene in 1887 on the river Epte near Giverny. The models are probably two of his stepdaughters, the Hoschedé girls, who often went boating with him. The bird's-eye view and the absence of any horizon come straight from Japanese prints.
Romantic and summery, it suits a bedroom, a living room or a reading nook. Our Claude Monet prints and posters include other figures by the water, from Camille at Bennecourt to the bathers of La Grenouillère. Our article on Monet tells the story of his blended family. Square format, several sizes.
