A young man with a mop of orange hair grins at something beyond the frame, a blue cornflower held between his lips. Behind him, red and orange brushstrokes twist across the background, while darker blue stripes mark his smock.
Van Gogh painted this portrait in June 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he was producing around one canvas a day. His model’s identity remains unknown, though he may have been a local boy. What stands out is the portrait’s playful, slightly cheeky mood, unusual in Van Gogh’s work. The colours are warm and left unmixed, with the face formed from confident strokes of green, pink and ochre.
For a portrait with a relaxed feel, this one makes a lovely choice for a living room or a teenager’s bedroom, whether in a Wellington townhouse or a family home elsewhere in New Zealand. It’s available as a poster in a range of sizes. Explore our Van Gogh portrait posters to see his other sitters, and read about Van Gogh’s final months in Auvers on our blog.
