A twisted tree leans out over the water, its branches spreading across almost the whole sky. Far behind it, on the other side of the bay, the old town of Antibes floats in a pink haze, its ramparts and church tower barely solid. The sea between them is pale, milky, almost white with heat.
In early 1888 Monet spent several months on the Côte d'Azur. Coming from the grey light of Normandy, he found the light so clear and pure that it was hard to paint. Here he answers it with soft pinks, turquoise and silver-green, and a composition borrowed from Japanese prints: one tree in front, the world behind.
