Here the table is seen from above, and the white tablecloth fills most of the picture. Apples in green, yellow and red are scattered across it, some in a low basket with bunches of grapes, others rolling freely towards the edge. The cloth is not really white at all: it is painted in blues, lilacs and pinks.
Monet made this version in 1880, at Vétheuil. Compared with his darker still lifes, it feels almost like a landscape, with the folds of linen working like snow and the fruit like a scattering of flowers. The signature and date sit in the upper left corner.
Fresh and light, it brightens a kitchen, a breakfast nook or a white dining room. Browse our Claude Monet prints and posters for other still lifes, and read our article on the painter to see where they fit in his life. Printed in several sizes, with or without a frame.
