A sandy towpath runs along the Seine under a row of tall trees. On the water, a single white sail. Across the river, low houses, a few factory chimneys and a little château with pointed roofs line the far bank, all under a wide summer sky.
Monet moved to Argenteuil, a small town just outside Paris, at the end of 1871. It was a place where leisure and industry met: Parisians came to sail at weekends, while new factories rose along the banks. He painted both without fuss, and this quiet promenade is one of the first pictures of his six years there.
Calm and open, it suits a living room or a study. It is part of our Monet collection alongside his regattas and bridges of the same town, and our Claude Monet article tells the story of those years. Choose your size, framed or not.
