A locomotive pulls in under the great glass and iron roof of the Gare Saint-Lazare, and the whole station dissolves into steam. Blue, grey and pale yellow clouds rise to the girders, a gas lamp stands in the middle of the platform, and small dark figures wait by the carriages.
In early 1877 Monet asked permission to work inside the station and painted a dozen views of it. For a painter of fog and changing light, the railway was a gift: the smoke made its own weather. This version, now in the Art Institute of Chicago, was shown at the third Impressionist exhibition that same year.
