Tall grass and wildflowers fill the lower half of the picture, white, yellow and pink, painted in quick flicks. Beyond them the river lies still, reflecting a line of poplars and the island on the far side, and a blue sky with soft clouds closes the scene.
Monet painted it in June 1880 at Vétheuil, where he lived for three years after leaving Argenteuil. The canvas, now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, has the freedom of a sketch: the flowers seem to move in the breeze, and you can almost smell the summer.
A green, peaceful view for a bedroom, a living room or a bathroom that looks onto nothing. It is one of many Seine landscapes in our Monet art prints, each slightly different in light. For the story behind his Vétheuil years, see our article. Several sizes, framed or not.
