Grey-blue trunks, dozens in all, rise above a carpet of dry orange leaves. They stand so close that the forest forms a screen, with just a few slivers of light visible in the distance.
Buchenwald I was painted in 1902, while Klimt was also working on his large allegorical paintings in Vienna. Among the trees, he took a quieter approach. There is no gold or symbolism to unravel here, just the contrast between upright trunks and the warm, speckled forest floor. The painting is held at the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden.
We think it sits well in a home office or a living room with plenty of timber, a natural fit for New Zealand interiors. Choose your preferred size, with or without a frame. If this woodland scene appeals to you, our Klimt art prints also feature his birch forest from the following year, painted in quite different light.
