Blue Nude III (1952) by Henri Matisse – Poster

The Blue Nudes series began as compositions made from painted paper cut-outs, cut, layered and pasted together. Their visible joins, shifts in tone and uneven surfaces are all part of the original works. Instead of digitally smoothing away these details, we’ve reproduced the pieces as faithfully as we can.

Henri Matisse, Blue Nude (1952) pares the human figure back to shape and colour. A rich ultramarine silhouette sits against soft ivory, its sure curves guiding your eye around the form. The negative space carries as much presence as the blue, giving the work a feel that’s both restful and lively. We’re drawn to the way it reads as a body and as abstract geometry. One colour, plenty of impact.

In his later cut-out period, Matisse distilled rhythm, clarity and movement into paper shapes, arranged with remarkable precision. His feel for scale and balance continues to influence contemporary interiors. • Works well with light oak, black or white frames.
• Looks at home on neutral walls alongside sand, clay or muted grey tones.
• Hang it on its own for a sculptural focal point, or pair it with line drawings for contrast.
