A woman in a white dress and hat stands half hidden at the edge of a garden path, almost swallowed by the vegetation. In front of her rises a dense clump of hollyhocks, dark green dotted with red, and above, a tree lets the summer light filter down onto the house behind.
She is Camille, Monet's wife, in the garden of their second house at Argenteuil in 1876. He often placed her in his pictures this way, not as a portrait sitter but as a figure in the landscape, a white note among the greens. The painting is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The tall, narrow format fits a hallway, a bedroom or the space between two windows. Our Monet prints and posters include several more portraits of Camille, and our article on Monet's life tells their story. Several sizes, framed or unframed.
