Here the fog has turned golden. The bridge is a pale grey ghost stretched across the canvas, its reflection fading into water the colour of peach and lemon. A faint plume of smoke rises in the middle, and on the right, the tower of Westminster can just be guessed in the glare.
Monet painted around thirty-five views of Charing Cross Bridge, each at a different hour and in a different weather. In this one the forms almost disappear: there is no line left, only veils of colour laid one over the other. It is as close to abstraction as he came before the late Water Lilies.
Light and soft, it brightens a bedroom or a living room without ever being loud. Pair it with the darker 1903 version from our Monet posters for a morning and evening duo. More about his London winters in our article on Monet's life.
